Can Civ V support internet multiplayer with casual log-out/log-in?

Can Civ V support internet multiplayer with casual log-out/log-in? - Young woman in casual clothes helping senior man in formal shirt with paying credit card in Internet using laptop while sitting at table

I've been talking with a couple of long-distance friends of mine about setting up a turn-based strategy game that we can play casually over a period of several weeks, or even months. What we really want is something where people can periodically log in, play their move and then log out again.

Thanks in advance!

This is what the Pitboss feature is for. Set up a dedicated server with a Pitboss game and players can log in and take their turn at their leisure.

Can you play Civ 5 online with friends?

You have three multiplayer options for Civilization V: Standard (over internet or LAN) Hotseat (local turn-based multiplayer gaming on the same machine and play by email with Giant Multiplayer Robot) Pitboss (a dedicated Civilization V multiplayer server)

Does Civ 5 require Internet to play?

You don't need to play the actual game. Just exit once you reach the menu. (You might even be able to get out during the cutscene by pressing Alt+F4.) After this, open the Steam window, go to File (upper left corner) and choose "Go Offline...".

How do I fix Civ 5 multiplayer?

The way this is fixed is by having one person (anyone other than the host) leave the game as soon as it is loaded and then rejoin the game while it is in progress. Note: They must join as normal and wait until it is loaded before they leave and rejoin.

How do you play local multiplayer on Civ 5?

Civilisation V still provides a "LAN" multiplayer. All you would have to do after having setup the family mode on your brother's computer, would be to launch steam offline on one of your computers, launch Civ 5 and create a LAN game.

Answer 2

Yes, this is possible for Civilization 5 using Giant Multiplayer Robot.

Giant Multiplayer Robot handles games by storing the save file, allowing players to download and play it when it's their turn. It has password protection to prevent people taking other players' turns and is generally more reliable than the mess that is Civ 5's live multiplayer.

Additionally, since everything is handled by storing the save file, you don't need to keep a server running.

The GMR devs also intend to add support for Beyond Earth in the near future.
