Can I directly battle my friends?

I know the main VS mechanic in Pokemon GO is the gyms but I have yet to find a local gym as I live in a somewhat rural area. Can I have a battle directly with my friends or do I need to find a gym to try the VS aspect of the game?

How do I battle my PokÃ©mon with friends?

Battling Friends Remotely

From the Map View, navigate to your Trainer Profile.

Tap the Friends tab at the top of the screen to open your Friend List.

Select a Friend that you wish to challenge.

Tap the Battle icon.

Tap on LET'S BATTLE! to send the Challenge.

Can you battle other people in PokÃ©mon?

2-4 players with a copy of Pok\xe9mon Sword and Pok\xe9mon Shield can battle or trade with each other online or via local wireless connection.

Can you battle gyms with friends?

Battle with Friends Trainers don't need to attack a gym alone. If they have any friends nearby, then they'll be able to battle the gym together! When doing so, the Pok\xe9mon defending the gym will take hits from all players currently fighting.
