I have the Skyrim Hearthfire DLC, and would like to know if bandit NPCs can steal from my house or not.

Is this possible, and is there a way to prevent it?

Your own houses can't be robbed, even the one in Riften.

Yes, if you crouch and are shown to be hidden you will be able to steal the item in question with out being caught. It is only Pick-Pocketing that has a chance to alert someone if you fail. When the item is just in the environment you always succeed.

How do you stop stealing in Skyrim?

One trick is to just simply sneak and stick to the shadows. Go near the target item, crouch and move slowly around until you are no longer noticeable. From this sweet-spot you can steal anything within reach, without moving, thus remaining undetected.

Can you get caught stealing in Skyrim?

Generally, when nobody's looking, you're safe: on the other hand, stealing\u2014and getting caught\u2014will place a bounty on your head for half the item's value.
