Do Biters get weaker further from your base?

I've been playing Factorio for a short time and have just developed a tank. I figured it would be worthwhile to explore the zones around my base and scout out potential mineral sites. I travelled beyond the range of my base's pollution and was surprised to see that biter nests were becoming more massive than those closest to my base.

I had assumed the biters nearest to my base would be strongest, as they consumed pollution, and that biters far away would be weaker - but doesn't seem to be the case.

Is this unexpected nest population normal? If I travelled further would biter spawns thin out?

Enemy strength is determined by the evolution factor, which is dependent on time passed, pollution units, and number of destroyed spawners. It is not directly affected by distance from any particular location.

How do biters expand?

Biters are one of two main antagonists in the game. They come in four sizes: small, medium, big and behemoth. In the beginning of a game, there will only be the small ones. With increasing pollution, they will become bigger, related to the enemy's evolution.

Do biter bases Respawn?

They don't respawn, but existing bases expand and sometimes the biters will send a small group to a location and set up a new base. They will not establish new bases too close to your structures. But they can put up a base within aggro range of your stuff.

Can biters spawn inside walls?

It's probably a very rare chance of happening, but it can happen. You will have to check your walls and make sure there is no way for biters to get by it.

Can biters cross water Factorio?

Just remember to build as far into the lake as possible. (It will look like the wall tile is half in the water when you are on the very edge). If you don't build right up to this spot, biters can sneak through.
