However I was under the impression that planet(oids) in your city's range are automatically mined.

Does building a mining station in your territory give an added benefit or....what?

Construction Ship Mining Stations are used to collect Minerals, Energy Credits and Strategic Resources from uninhabited planets, stars and asteroids. Mining Stations that collect Energy do not cost any upkeep.

How do you build a mining habitat Stellaris?

Research resources are indicated on your galaxy and sector map by an icon representing the type of research they collect. In order to build the research station, select the construction ship and right click on the resource in the system map or right click on the sector in the galaxy map.
