I know that in x-com stunning and interrogating an enemy would give you a boost to research.

Currently while playing x-com 2, my weapon research is slow, but I'm yet to find a way to speed it up. Do the same ideas apply that I need to find the right alien type to skulljack to gain a research bonus?

When should I use the Skulljack?

A Skulljack is required twice to progress in story: In the first the Skulljack is used on an ADVENT Officer, and later, on a Codex. The Skullmining upgrade at the Proving Grounds improves the Hack stat of any soldier carrying a Skulljack by 25 (on normal difficulty). This makes them an ideal item for Specialists.

What does skull mining do?

Skullmining: Soldiers can hack into the chip in ADVENT soldiers, granting a possibility of obtaining Intel or Avatar facility locations. The chance of success increases with the soldier's Hack stat. However, it should be noted that if the hack fails, your soldier will take damage.

How does the Skulljack work?

When the ability is activated, your soldier runs to a space adjacent to the target, and uses the Skulljack to attack the target. This has a 70% hit chance. If the attack misses, it deals 2 damage to the target and nothing further happens. If the attack hits, then you are granted access to the ADVENT Psionic network.
