Dwarf Fortress: Area not getting designating for mining?
I’m a new player of Dwarf Fortress. I was following the Quick Start Guide here.
I’m trying to designate an area for mining but it doesn’t seem to work. According to the quick start guide, a “a rectangle will be highlighted”. But nothing of that sort is happening, and none of my dwarves start mining.
Yes, I do have mining turned on for one of my dwarves, and he does have a pick, so I am not sure what the problem is.

Why are my dwarves not mining Dwarf Fortress?
This is easiest if you have an exposed hillside on the map. If not you may need to go down a z level and designate ramps up ( d , r ) next to your mining area. The dwarves must be able to path to this digging area. If it is separated by z-levels, you must add stairs or ramps.How do you get dwarves to mine dwarf fortress?
Move the cursor to the starting point, then press enter. You should see a green flashing cross symbol indicating that it's in Selection Mode. Move the cursor to another point to define the opposite corners of a rectangle, press enter again. Re: Adventure Mode Mining Rest assured, it is planned, so sometime over the next 15 years or so you'll be able to build, mine and everything else fortress dwarves get up to. To pass the time, I believe there's a Dfhack mod which allows you do it. Even though it seems so obvious, it's actually not.Dwarf Fortress Guide:How To Dig/Mine Downwards
