How many times do you have to 'tap' a Pokemon?

When a Pokemon appears in the wild, you have to tap it to enter the 'catching' stage.

I've noticed sometimes I have to tap quite a lot to enter that stage; other times I only have to tap once. Sometimes I tap furiously and nothing happens - the wild Pokemon eventually disappears.

Is there a correlation between number of taps required and the experience points of the Pokemon? Or is one tap enough and the failed ones are just server timeouts?

You only need to ever tap a Pokemon in the wild once.

The game right now is just extremely laggy and the servers are still (likely) on fire following the launch.

I've seen several places speculating on how quickly to tap the button to get the max attack, and after a bit of trial and error, I believe I've pegged the optimal rate of tapping for attack to be close to 4 taps per-second.

Supposedly, if you botch a toss you can tap the Pokeball when it bounces or rolls away in order to retrieve it. But staffers here have been tapping away and trying this out for a while, with no real indication that it works. But some people online have say it works for them. Huge, if true.

How do you tap Pokemon battle?

Attacks work by tapping on the screen or holding, depending on if players want to use a Fast Attack or Charged Attack (which requires many Fast Attacks first!). Players are also given three Protect Shields which you can use to protect your Pokemon from a Charged Attack but once they're gone, they're gone.
