I can't figure out how to deploy an army onto an enemy planet. I'd heard that you're supposed to research troop transports at some point, but I can't find any mention of such a technology anywhere.

How do you invade enemy planet Stellaris?
As designed, an assault army can't land and invade an enemy-controlled planet if they don't control the system's starbase. The tooltip is clear about that. This works both sides (an invader can't land on a non-occupied world, a liberator can't land on an occupied world). How do you build the army in Stellaris?
Select the transport ship fleet, right click planet to either orbit or land. If they're already in orbit, you can land them by clicking on the button of same name at the armies screen of the planet. How to Invade Planets - Quick and Dirty Stellaris Beginners Guide
