Shadowrun Dragonfall Character Choice/Build

I started Shadowrun Dragonfall and thought to me "this time I am going to play without reading the usual walkthrough/faq sites" - only to find that there is no guidance in-game to what to do and what the effects are (e. g. during character creation and what to spend Karma on).

With my first creation I am already facing difficulties in first mission - which makes me wonder about later and I dont want to find out I chose badly after playing half the game.

What is a good build and what other characters to tag along?

(In other RGPs, I like to play Mage, Summoner, Ranger, I know those have equivalents here.)
