Sketch will fail if: The move tries to copy a move the user already knows. The battle does not allow experience points to be earned (such as link battles or Battle Tower battles). The target is transformed.

How does sketch work Smeargle?

Sketch is a move that allows the user to permanently learn the last move used by its target. Smeargle learns Sketch at Levels 1, 11, 21, 31, 41, 51, 61, 71, 81, 91, but it can only know 1 Sketch at a time. This is one of the most interesting moves in the game, and it's exclusive to Smeargle.

Chatter is the one of only three moves that cannot be Sketched, presumably because as a field move, if used by a Pok\xe9mon other than Chatot, it does not temporarily change the battle cry of the respective Pok\xe9mon to the recorded version even if audio is recorded.
