What are the requirements to get supply drops?

While playing Advanced Warfare multiplayer online, suddenly the message "supply drop" appears and afterwards in the lobby I have a new package to open with various stuff in it (customized weapons, armor, etc.). I couldn't figure out if you have to actually do something to get this or just play and wait for it to appear randomly.

As I commented, you get supply drops by completing challenges and regularly through your game time.

Supply Drops are available in all game modes, and can be reviewed in the Armory in Multiplayer.

Campaign Mode \u2013 earned at various checkpoints or after completing objectives.

Exo Survival Mode \u2013 earned by unlocking tiers and completing areas.
