What happens if I destroy all the tanks?

What happens if I destroy all the tanks? - Shabby industrial area with rusty infrastructure

In the main storyline, I've reached the point where

there're a bunch of tanks outside GCPD.

I've tried a couple times (but had to give up because of how long it takes) to use the disruptor to sabotage and destroy all the tanks.

If I do have the patience to do so, does destroying them change anything (aside from a little bit of extra XP)?

Can tanks be destroyed?

The 0.23-to-0.47-inch (5.8 to 11.9 mm) thick armor generally prevented penetration by small arms fire and shell fragments. However, even a near miss from field artillery or an impact from a mortar HE round could easily disable or destroy the tank: if the fuel tank was ruptured, it could incinerate the tank's crew.

Can tanks survive grenades?

AT grenades are unable to penetrate the armor of modern tanks, but may still damage lighter vehicles.

Can a RPG destroy a tank?

Even if the RPG hit does not completely disable the tank or kill the crew, it can still damage external equipment, lowering the tank's effectiveness or forcing the crew to abandon and destroy it.

What will stop a tank?

"You could use a high explosive squash head, which flattens out like a pancake when it hits. It then detonates and sends a shock wave through the armour which causes the inside to 'scab' and fly about inside." A recoilless rifle or anti-tank guided missile might also do the trick.
