What happens to the investments into my city if I join another one? - Aerial view of modern apartment building with One Liberty Plaza located in business area of New York

I have played alone so far and made some considerable investments into my city, that you get during the Tutorial. If I join a city created by other players, what happens to the investments in my own one? Will those have been in vain or will they be saved until I leave the other city?

How do you divide up investments?

How to Allocate Your Money
  • Invest 10% to 25% of the stock portion of your portfolio in international securities. The younger and more affluent you are, the higher the percentage.
  • Shave 5% off your stock portfolio and 5% off the bond portion, then invest the resulting 10% in real estate investment trusts (REITs).

  • What happens when you withdraw investments?

Withdrawals are subject to ordinary income taxes, which can be higher than preferential tax rates on long-term capital gains from the sale of assets in taxable accounts, and, if taken prior to age 59\xbd, may be subject to a 10% federal tax penalty (barring certain exceptions).

How do Opportunity Zone investments work?

QOZs are designed to spur economic development by providing tax incentives for investors who invest new capital in businesses operating in one or more QOZs. First, an investor can defer tax on any prior eligible gain to the extent that a corresponding amount is timely invested in a Qualified Opportunity Fund (QOF).

Can you lose all your investment?

Technically, yes. You can lose all your money in stocks or any other investment that has some degree of risk. However, this is rare. Even if you only hold one stock that does very poorly, you'll usually retain some residual value.

    Answer 2

Don't know if it's still relevant, but still:

When you join another city, all of your investments travel with you, so there's clearly an advantage to get to a city with a lot of players for combined total investments. However, there's a penalty of 10% of your total investments that is applied when you leave a city in a 10 days period after joining it. To be more specific, the percentage diminishes based on how many days you've spent in the city. So, basically, if you leave a city on the 1st day, you'll lose 10%. On the second day, you'll lose 9% and so on. Leaving a city on 11th day is completely safe since you won't lose anything.
