What is the 'Boost' gauge used for?

A lot of different cars have the 'RPM' gauge, which is fairly obvious that it acts similarly to an RPM gauge on a normal car. However, I have no idea what the 'Boost' gauge does - is there a certain boost that I can activate? Does it give me an advantage when it's full? I'm not sure what it does, since most of the time it matches the RPM gauge.
Here's a screenshot of the boost gauge, highlighted in pink:

Do you really need a boost gauge?
If you use a turbo or supercharger to increase your engine's efficiency, then a boost gauge is a must-have accessory. It monitors the pressure flowing into the combustion chamber. Low pressure is inefficient, while high pressure can blow the engine.Where should I run my boost gauge?
Your boost gauge line will tee into the three-way tee. The vacuum hose has to be run through the car. Slide it down near the steering column boot on the driver side of the firewall. Using your XACTO knife, cut a hole to pass the line into the pedal assembly.Does a boost gauge tell you vacuum?
A boost gauge (boost-only) should only ever be considered on either a diesel application, as they do not produce vacuum and spend much time in boost, or on a blown race car that spends most of its life a quarter mile at a time at wide open throttle. How does boost affect horsepower?
The greater the turbo boost pressure, the greater the engine power. Besides, boosting an engine using a turbocharger does not only help to increase the engine's horsepower but also its torque.Ylvis - The Fox (What Does The Fox Say?) [Official music video HD]
