In XCOM 2, the storyline requires the player to

Skulljack an Advent officer. This triggers what is (at that stage in the game) a difficult fight.

The option remains to do this to other enemies, and indeed there's an achievement for doing it to every type of enemy. What is the benefit of doing this?

An extra benefit is that if you've researched Skullmining, equipping the Skulljack gives your Specialist a straight +20 to hacking skill. Handy for getting those large rewards!

When should I use the Skulljack?

A Skulljack is required twice to progress in story: In the first the Skulljack is used on an ADVENT Officer, and later, on a Codex. The Skullmining upgrade at the Proving Grounds improves the Hack stat of any soldier carrying a Skulljack by 25 (on normal difficulty). This makes them an ideal item for Specialists.

What does the Skulljack do?

Abilities. The Skulljack can grant access to the neural chips in certain enemies, but requires melee range to activate. Attempt to hack the neural network of ADVENT Soldiers at melee range and gain access to enemy intel.
