Why did West Francia fall apart?

Why did West Francia fall apart? - Man Holding Fedora Hat on Head

In my first game with the Charlemagne DLC (starting 769) King Charles Karling the Great created a pretty big realm. But then suddenly, in 791, many of his vassals, including the duchies of Brunswick, Saxony, Thüringia, Franconia and Burgundy, became independent:

I didn't see any independence revolt and I'm also not aware of any other mechanic that could have caused this.

So, what happened? Is this something specific to Charlemagne, the character? Is there something I could do to investigate this further?

Why did Francia break up?

Francia split into Neustria, Austrasia, and Burgundy United, the brothers sought to remove their father's cousin Chlothar II from power and they did succeed in conquering most of his kingdom, reducing him to only a few cities, but they failed to capture him.

What happened East Francia?

East Francia after the Treaty of Verdun of 843. The east\u2013west division, enforced by the Germanic-Latin language split, "gradually hardened into the establishment of separate kingdoms", with East Francia becoming the Kingdom of Germany and West Francia the Kingdom of France.

What happened Middle Francia?

Following the 855 partition, 'Middle Francia' became only a geographic term and the bulk of its territory was reorganized as Lotharingia, named after Lothair I's namesake son.
