Can people who own the Necromancer and people who don't play together?

My friends have the Diablo 3 Battle Chest version of the game and I want to play as the Necromancer in the Eternal Collection version.

So I was wondering: would I be able to use the character even though the others don't have it?

(Just wanted to make sure so I don't waste my money)

Your friends won't have access to the class, that's about it.

Can you play Diablo 3 with someone who has Reaper of Souls?

Yes you can still play together. As stated by this blue post on the forum : If you have Reaper of Souls, then you can join in games that have been created by players that do not have the expansion.

Do you need rise of the Necromancer?

No you don't have to buy it. Everything can be played without it.
