For my rank, does it matter how many points I earn per match?

I wonder whether I move up the rank ladder (semi-pro, pro, veteran, ...) faster if I earn e.g. 1000 points in one match compared to 500 points each in two matches.
I'm asking because I see people leaving the match shortly before it ends, not being the top player.
