Hopper pull less then 5 items at once

How can I pull a certain amount of items from a chest using hopper. The chest is full of unstackable items such as tools and armor. How can I get the first 4 items? For 5, I can use the hopper until it gets full.

Can hoppers filter multiple items?

Basically you put a hopper below a hopper line and point that into a dropper. The dropper gets filled up with stacks of the items you want to filter and the hopper gets some of those items and the last slots are filled with blocker items.
