How do I fight Alghouls effectively?
I'm doing a contract at the moment, but I ran into trouble defeating two level 5 Alghouls that roam the area I have to examine. I'm at the same level myself, but the Alghouls are quite a bit harder than any other enemy of that level that I previously encountered. I'm playing on the second-hardest difficulty level.
I know that Axii is supposed to help, but when I tried it I still got staggered when attacking them after axiing them. They're also pretty fast, I had some trouble dodging them, which is quickly fatal as I can only survive 2-3 hits from them. The bestiary also doesn't contain a lot of useful information about them.
How do the spikes on Alghouls and Axii work exactly? How do you evade their attacks, dodging or rolling, and in which direction? Any other tips on defeating them?

I used Quen to protect myself. It only absorbs 1 hit from them, but when you attack them it only takes away like 10% of your shield, so you can hit them multiple times without losing your shield or getting staggered.
Anytime you get hit by them though, you should dodge and wait until you can cast your shield again. I also was able to fight them only one at a time, after I drew one away from the other.

Alghouls differ from normal ghouls in size, strength, coloring and, most importantly, intelligence. Whereas ghouls and graveirs are primitive creatures unfit to plan even the simplest ambush, alghouls and their kindred (such as cemetaurs) are capable of forethought, and are thus much more dangerous. What is the difference between a ghoul and an alghoul?
Apply necrophage oil before combat. You need Axii to cause them to withdraw their spikes (they produce them when angered) that's probably whay you're taking damage when attacking. 2-3 fast attacks and dodge rather than roll so you're still close enough to hit again after their attack. How to kill ALGHOUL in Witcher 3 The Wild Hunt - Death March

I was having this exact problem and what I found to be very helpful was to circle around behind them and fire a crossbow at the closest one from a good distance away. He will then go after you but the other will not, that way you must only fight one at a time and it is much easier.

For me, Igni was the winner. It stuns, burns and can even set the Alghoul on fire. A blast of Igni, a couple dodges back, giving time for stamina to regen before the Alghoul advances again. Rinse-repeat 4 times, dead Alghoul. The first time I tried Quen/necrophage oil/fast attacks - took me ages, and I died. Igni was the way to go!
