How are fishing rods rated?

There are three general ratings that measure action: Fast, Moderate and Slow. There are also some in-between ratings like Extra-Fast and Moderate Fast. Fast Action bends in the top 20-30% of the rod, and it is the most common action rating. Moderate action bends at the 30-40% mark and Slow action bends at 50% or below.

Why do fishing poles not snap?

When you raise your rod to an angle that's great than 90\xb0 from the ground, you're putting a lot of stress on the rod and increasing the chances that it'll break. So be sure to keep the rod at an angle less than 90\xb0 when you're fighting fish or trying to pull out your lure when it's snagged.

Are longer fishing rods better?

A rod's length affects casting distance, accuracy, and hook set leverage. Longer rods (over 7 feet) will cast farther than shorter rods of the same power and action, and shorter (<under 7 feet) rods will be more accurate. Longer rods also give you more leverage on the hook set, as they take up more line while swinging.

How do you read a fishing rod specs?

In most cases the first group refers to the type of rod (e.g. 'S' for spinning and 'C' for casting), its length, number of pieces, and weight. For example, in the photo above, S762M signifies that this is a spinning rod, which is 7'6\u201d long, comes in two pieces, and has medium weight/power.
