How long will a trapped animal stay or live in a trap?
I like to use a lot of traps for rabbits, but also for frogs and spiders occasionally.

Often I'll setup a lot in areas near my base camp with rabbit holes, because the traps provide a steady stream of crock-pot ready meat. Eventually, however, I find myself managing a large number of traps, that I sometimes don't need immediately.
This leads me to wonder how long I can leave something in a trap and what happens to the trapped creature when that time runs out?

The first answer is half correct. If you are playing Don't Starve without Reign of Giants, the animals will stay alive indefinitely. Reign of Giants added the need to feed live animals that are in your inventory, which also carried over to live animals inside traps. The time is about 3 days until they starve.

How long can a rabbit live in a trap?
Do not keep an animal trapped in the cage for longer than 24 hours. Any non-target animals should be released immediately. Traps are set by placing them on the ground and can be picked up again at any time. To bait a Trap once set, simply place a food item in it. Bait will be consumed upon a successful catch. Once a Trap has caught something, it will shake and "jump" around with the animal inside. My ANIMALS WERE ATTACKED! DID WE TRAP THE CULPRIT ?!
