How to improve Power skill?

How to improve Power skill? - Crop anonymous male drilling holes in wooden panel while working on table in workshop

I'm finding that my Power skill is lagging behind Survivor and Agility by a few levels: 8 compared to 11 and 12. Given that the game generally doesn't want you engaging with the zombie hordes, what strategies are there for improving the Power skill tree?

And when I say that the game doesn't want you engaging with the hordes, I'm speaking from my experiences of:

  1. crappy weapons that take forever to melee kill a single zombie (yes, the weapons are finally getting a bit better, however you get my point)
  2. infected that swarm you when you DO engage the hordes and make any noise
  3. the overall design of parkour and rooftops indicates you're supposed to keep off the streets (in general)

At Power level 9, Stomp can be acquired. Personally my Power level has power levelled ever since. You can one-shot walkers without even knocking them down first. Stand on a car, wait for the walkers to come close or climb on, and channel your inner Bruce Lee. I find the front of a van works best where walkers can't really hit you nor climb on. You too may find yourself addicted to alternating between Super Hard/Head Kickā„¢ Simulator and collecting bags of cocaine like a cartel car crash (nose) candy like you're Crane the candy man.

Until Power lv 9, you might be able to make use of Vault (Agility lv 4) + Ground Pound (Power lv 7). But it may require the Power lv 12 upgrade (Slam) to be really useful.

    Answer 2

Simply put, power begets more power (skill).

The best way to increase your Power skill is by engaging in combat through normal play. You are correct that your starting weapons are absolutely terrible and parkour is the intended method of play for this stage in the game. As you progress in the game you will slowly find weapons at higher Survivor levels which can be used to increase your Power level more easily.

To increase your Power skill you should focus on increasing your Survivor level. This is done through enduring the night without sleep, turning in GRE airdrops, and completing quests. As stated, the weapons you find are tied to your Survivor level so you will be more likely to find powerful machetes, crowbars, and sledgehammers.

When you start to find strong weapons you will be able to take on zombie hordes more easily while engaging in normal exploration. Clearing out safe houses and completing escort quests are two common situations where you'll be forced into combat and increase your Power skill through "normal" play. Now, with a high Power Skill you'll be stronger and more equipped to complete quests, collect airdrops and explore at night. See where this is going?

In short: Survivor Skill leads to better weapons leads to higher Power Skill leads to higher Survivor Skill

There is one other way to quickly earn Power skill points: Zone challenges. These challenges are encounters with survivors which offer trials of escalating difficulty. The two main kind of challenges are parkour challenges and combat challenges. As you might expect, combat challenges offer Power Skill experience points as a reward. These can provide a quick boost of experience points if you want to go go through the encounter.

As a bonus, these challenges can often be completed at any level; the game will provide weapons for you so your character will be able to easily deal with the zombies in these challenges. For instance the challenge Dying Lunch in the slums will temporarily provide you with a firearm and ammunition so you'll be able to survive regardless of your level. Similar challenges may provide you with enhanced throwing stars or an electrically charged machete - regardless of tool you'll be killing biters with ease.

    Answer 3

Early game is a bit grindy, because your power skills are so weak and you'll have a hard time killing things.

However, there is one way to level it up a bit easier, and that's to use Spike Traps.

Specifically, if you hang around a spiked trap, you can do multiple kicks to knock zombies into it and gain experience. This is a boring but very reliable way to improve your Power Skill because the trap kills them.

As per the other answer, once you get to 9 and get Stomp, you can actually kill zombies without dependency on the environment. It'll only get easier from then on.
