Your profile name isn't your in-game name. You can see that your name is changed by looking to the right bottom of the launcher:

Why is my Minecraft username not updating?

You cannot change your name if you created the account within the last 30 days, nor can you change your name more than once every 30 days. You also must change your name to a name that hasn't been chosen by someone else at this point.

How long does it take for your Minecraft name to change?

When you change you username, you have a 30 day cooldown before you can change your name again (so be sure you pick a name you like). Once you change your name, you are given 37 days (the cooldown plus a week) to revert back to your old name, before the old name is made available to other players.

Why cant I play Minecraft After I change my name?

It's caused by remaining logged in after changing your name. Not everything is updated. You need to open the Minecraft launcher, log out, and log back in again (i.e. you need to enter your user and password again). This should fix it.

Mojang's systems are cached. Try closing your game client and opening it up again after 10 minutes.

If this does not work, then some weird error has gone on in the backend, and it'd be logical to contact Mojang.

You can check what the Mojang API is showing in a GUI on www.namemc.com
