Nether Portal never goes to Nether

Nether Portal never goes to Nether - Beige Ancient Ruins

I have a FTB Unleashed server, which I'm in the process of setting up before going public. Part of that setup is checking the Nether etc. So I built a Nether portal and strangely all it does is pass me around Nether Portals in the Overworld.

What have I done wrong?

The DIM1 folder is missing - so I suspect some generation is supposed to happen?

Best Answer

DIM1 Folder is just for Nether Reseting. Deleting the DIM1 File just resets the Nether back to its original form when you first spawned. Check if your server.propeties file Nether is enabled.

Do Nether portals always go to the same place?

Overworld portals that are within 1024 blocks distance of each other on both X and Z axis are almost always going to link to the same Nether realm portal on initial construction, unless more precisely paired portals are built (see below).

How do you make the nether portal go to another place?

So in general what you want to do for every portal after the second is:
  • Build your overworld portal.
  • Light it up.
  • Before entering, press F3 and note down the X and Z coordinates. ...
  • Go through.
  • You should (hopefully!) be at your old portal. ...
  • Whip out a calculator and divide both coordinates by eight.

  • How far away do Nether portals have to be to not link bedrock?

The distance that your new portal needs to be away from the old one isn't terribly large, only 128 blocks, but it's measured in terms of the destination world; every block in the Nether is worth eight in the overworld, meaning you'll need to move around 1024 blocks or so away to keep a new portal from joining the one ...
