Screen refresh rates and stuttering

Screen refresh rates and stuttering - Taking A Picture With White Iphone 5s

Been playing around with the refresh rate on my monitor recently.

If my monitor is on 60hz, the game runs at 60fps and everything looks smooth. However, every couple of seconds there's a small and brief bit of stutter. Not sure why this is.

If my monitor is on 120 / 144 hz, the game seems to lock itself to 80fps for whatever reason and looks terrible. It looks like the periodic stutter I have on 60fps, except constant and much more pronounced.

If my monitor is on 240hz, the game runs at ~170 fps. It doesn't look quite as smooth as 60fps on 60hz, but now it doesn't have the occasional stutter and rotating camera feels the same consistently.

Tl;Dr - Monitor on 60hz looks good with periodic stutter. Monitor on 240hz looks slightly worse with no stutter. Monitor on 120 / 144hz looks like garbage.

I'm super confused as to why this can be the case. What is going on here? Shouldn't higher FPS look better? It's my understanding that if the game fps is higher than the refresh rate, then I might get screen tearing, but here my refresh rate is always higher than the game fps, so that can be the case, right?

You may have enabled 'Adaptive (half refresh rate)' for VSync in your video card's control panel.

If you have a NVIDIA card, open NVIDIA Control Panel (right click desktop -> NVIDIA Control Panel) and go to 'Manage 3D Settings' in the top left. Under Global Settings, scroll down to 'Vertical Sync' and set it to either 'Use the 3D Application Setting', 'On', or 'Off'. The best setting for you will depend on whatever works best with your particular monitor. You should also check what your VSync setting is in the game.

Can refresh rate cause stuttering?

Micro stutter most often occurs when the rate of new frames doesn't quite match up to your monitor's refresh rate and vsync is enabled.

Why is my screen stuttering so much?

Computer freezing or stuttering is usually caused by outdated drivers, operating system, browsers or applications. Faulty hardware may also cause these issues.

Does screen refresh rate affect performance?

Generally speaking, the higher a monitor's refresh rate, the more FPS your CPU and GPU will need to supply, and the more benefit you'll receive from higher performance options. With that in mind, games vary in how much load they put on the CPU and GPU.

How do I fix my stuttering screen?

Right-click on your desktop and select Display Settings under \u201cSystem Settings\u201d Select Advanced Display Settings at the bottom of the menu. Adjust your screen resolution to a lower setting. Click Apply.
