What are buttholes for? - What Text on a Pink Surface

What gameplay purpose do the biomechanical buttholes serve in SOMA? Are they save points? Health rechargers?

Some of them need to be activated to progress the story but others appear to be optional; is there a bonus/negative to activating them all?

Why do we have anuses?

On humans, the gluteus maximus attaches to the upper part of the pelvis, the ilium. This placement allows for trunk stability and helps keep us balanced. Most researchers believe that we have big butts because it helps us stay upright, and helps balance us when walking and running.

What are Buttholes made of?

The anus is approximately 2 to 3 inches long and composed of skin type cells also known as squamous cells. There are two sphincter muscles: an internal sphincter muscle, which can be felt as a muscular ring, beyond which is the rectum; and an external sphincter muscle.

Why do Buttholes have lines?

The anorectal line separates the anus from the rectum. Tough tissue called fascia surrounds the anus and attaches it to nearby structures. Circular muscles called the external sphincter ani form the wall of the anus and hold it closed. Glands release fluid into the anus to keep its surface moist.

Where do Buttholes come from?

One of the oldest hypotheses holds that the anus and the mouth originated from the same solo opening, which elongated, then caved in at the center and split itself in two. The newly formed anus then moseyed to the animal's posterior.
