What's the best way to start the Crash Landing modpack?

What's the best way to start the Crash Landing modpack? - Brown and White Track Field

With the new Hardcore Questing Mode (HQM), numerous modpacks have surfaced, including Crash landing.

I've seen both popular and less popular YouTubers start "Let's Plays" on Crash Landing, probably because of the similarities it shows to Agrarian Skies (a hugely popular modpack).

Crash Landing is a situation where your ship has crash landed on a dust covered planet and you have to battle both dehydration and overheating to survive (among other things).

Most people, at the start of a Crash Landing play-through, go outside and build a wall, or dig a moat, to cover their crashed ship. The problem with this method is that working outside rapidly increases your core temperature and dehydration rate.

I was wondering if a smarter move would be to start your base underneath your ship, thus avoiding the dangers of outside.

Obviously the dust would fall down, but if you build your base under the solid blocks of your ship, it's likely that the dust wouldn't reach you.

Also, since you're technically inside, your heat increases at a very slow rate and you dehydration is also slower. At night you might cool off, but then you can build a furnace or torch to keep you warm (which are both easy to acquire).

Am I missing something important or is the best survival method by and large just a matter of personal preference?

I haven't checked any of the source code so I don't know which factors affect the rate at which your character overheats but, logically, building an underground base in the desert seems like a more logical thing to do than just building a wall open to the desert sun.

Graphical answers with formulas and facts will be highly appreciated.

    Answer 2

This answer is not complete, but feel free to build on it.

    Day 1

Start off the first day by clearing all the water quests:

    Those in purple.

Gathering Supplies - Use the Crescent Hammer to retrieve the Fluid Transposers
Sapping the Saplings - Use the Fluid Transposer to create water, then submit them using the QDS.
The Very Basics - Manual submit a dust.
The Easy Route - Manual submit another dust.
Drinking Mud - Craft an empty bottle and the dirt to create it. Manual submit that dirty bottle you made.
Purified - Manual submit the clean water bottle you got from Drinking Mud.

Grab all your equipment (needlegun, ammo and other stuff in the strongboxes).

Whilst doing that - You want to be gathering about 2 stacks of dust (for the night), by digging a 2-block deep (and wide) ditch around your ship. Leave at least 5-10 blocks around the ship for room to do 'stuff'. We'll wall up with the ditch as the moat later. Don't start building that wall either; you'll just be wasting your time, and you do not have to finish the ditch all in one day.
Also, plant your trees (you have bonemeal) and crook them for saplings. Make sure you have at least 19 saplings. The more the merrier.
Lastly, don't forget to cover up the fuel leak, on the left of the ship. Ugly things will happen if you forgot to do that. (Mobs will go into it to suicide, creepers explode and no mob drops. Ensure you have /gamerule mobGriefing false on. Otherwise, you'll end up with a giant hole)

When it starts getting dark, make sure you don't have a tree that could be used as shelter by mobs and, have locked yourself in the ship (the dark glass is minable with fists)

By bad things, I mean The big ditch. The mod creator did not intend for this to happen.

    Night 1

Using the dust you retrieved, place down your sieve (if you haven't already), sieve all night once you completed the following tasks:

Make some chests (to store items) and then create the Tinkers' Construct crafting tables and craft stencils for:

    • Axe Head (for Mattock)
    • Shovel Head (for Mattock)
    • Knife Blade (for Throwing Knife)
    • Crossbar (for Throwing Knife)
    • Tool Rod (for pretty much any tool)

Use your bonemeal and create a Mattock and shovel. Do not a craft throwing knife yet. Unless you want to craft things again (for HQM does not detect crafting for Tinkers' Construct items).

    Day 2

Clear out the mobs with your needle gun and [not complete]

    Answer 3

Start a cobble gen. You can do so within a few minutes. Make a pick and you're set. You can build a wall or reinforce your underground base.
