What's up with The Rotten? - Persons Feet on White Surface

So ever since I first fought The Rotten in the Dark Souls 2, the opening cutscene to the boss fight really has me wondering about the character. Of all the bosses, he is the one I know next to diddly squat about.

How did he come to be? He's a collection of bodies, was that the cause of Nito's soul trying to find a body to possess? And what's with the statues? Why is he getting so upset? Is he mourning? If so, mourning what?
