Where can I find gravel to collect?

Where can I find gravel to collect? - Crop faceless tattooed artist taking paint bottle from heap of multicolored spray cans placed on ground on street of city

I'm currently playing Minecraft beta 1.5, and I started working on a trail system. I'm using gravel for the trails and it looks nice. Unfortunately, I've run out of gravel, and I can't find gravel anywhere but deep underground. I've checked my surrounding area for gravel beaches, but they I have yet to find one.

How can I easily find gravel?

Before 1.8 version you could find Gravel Beaches, which can be (obviously) a good source of gravel:

As sand beaches, there are randomly generated near water, in a lower frequency that sand. Be careful because gravel can be "floating" over a cavern and start falling once you start mining it.
