Why can't I join my friend's LAN game?

Why can't I join my friend's LAN game? - Faceless multiracial sport team stacking hands on court

I have my boyfriend added as a friend on Xbox Live, and we've played Minecraft before in the past, but now we haven't been able to for the past two weeks. His games are set online, we're connected to the same WiFi, and both worlds will show up in the friends section. But for some reason neither of us can join the other's game. Why is this happening and can I fix it?

There could be many reasons for this. Your connection might not be strong enough to actually play online, or it could be an issue with Minecraft itself.

First you should check Minecraft for any updates as you cannot play with other players across different versions/updates.

How do I join my friends LAN game?

Click Start LAN World, and you'll see a message that a local game has been hosted. Other players on the same network who wish to join can now start their game, select Multiplayer, and their computers should automatically detect the game.

How do I join a LAN game with IP?

The local IP should be formatted like 192.168. 1.1 or similar, and have 192.168 as the first 2 numbers. When the local IP and port are found, type them into the "Server Address" field (under either Direct Connect or in the Add Server dialogue), formatted like IP:port (e.g. 192.168. 1.1:5000) to join the LAN game.
