Is dogmeat worth keeping as a companion?

Is dogmeat worth keeping as a companion? - Person Wearing White Pants and White Socks Standing Beside Brown Broom

I'm still early game but I've just unlocked a new companion. Should I keep dogmeat or do human followers do more damage?

Dogmeat does have one nice skill, he finds good stuff lying around in the wasteland; stimpacks most of the time. But he did point me to a crate full of nice gear in Bedford Station that I had overlooked.

I don't know if other companions can do this too as I have only played with dogmeat - but it does seem like a dog-specific skill.

Is Dogmeat a good companion?

Dogmeat doesn't actually count as a companion, so you can unlock the Lone Wanderer perk freely while he's around. He can find hidden items, and can incapacitate enemies in fights. He's not too concerned with your ethics, which makes him a pretty handy companion in that regard.

Is Codsworth or Dogmeat a better companion?

Codsworth is a better fighter, can carry far more and will give you a purified water once a day when you talk to him, he's the better choice unless you use the Lone Wanderer perk which doesn't count dogmeat as a companion.

Is Dogmeat a good companion Fallout 3?

Dog is man's best friend, even at the end of the world. Dogmeat is the companion character who shows up the most in series with the canine in Fallout 3 being a descendant of the original dog from the first game. He's pretty useful in combat, if not the strongest character, but oh my god look how cute he is.

Is Dogmeat affected by live and love?

As of patch 1.2, Live & Love still has no effect on Cait, Curie, Dogmeat, MacCready or Preston Garvey.

While Dogmeat doesn't do as much damage as other characters, as you scale in level and gain damage boosting skills yourself, this becomes mostly irrelevant since companion DPS will be usually terrible no matter what you do. Outside of building your own companion via the Automatron DLC, Dogmeat's arguably the best companion you can get.

He's fast, relatively small enough you can jump over him, he NEVER JUDGES YOU FOR YOUR ACTIONS so you can do whatever you want when he's with you (no leaving you cause you do too much jet or stole too many fusion cores from raiders), his enemy/item finding abilities can be rather useful on the side and he's an excellent tank.

However, there's one thing that needs to be considered about his attack capabilities. While it is true his damage is low, he has the ability from the start to essentially remove an enemy from play by biting into them, plus whatever he distracts by being up front. This ability to "distract" or latch on and disable an enemy is unique to Dogmeat alone. At later levels where enemies have lots of hp and you're doing more damage via perk enhancements than base gear anyway (meaning your companions hit like noodles reguardless of their gear), Dogmeat becomes the vastly superior option. This is emphasized like wild fire and made absolutely insanely powerful when you consider the power of 3 or 4 of the Lone Wanderer perk.

When you consider all these things, quite frankly, it's easy to see why Dogmeat's Top Tier when it comes to companion choice. The only thing comparable is an automatron with huge carry weight, dual fatman shoulder launchers, an assaultron head laser and some experimental missile launchers for hands. But those have drawbacks like the hands and launchers sometimes needing repair, the lack of move speed at times, often they get stuck in hall ways and block your way cause they're lol huge, etc. Plus you need the perk to not take damage from companions or the fatmans will kill you.

Taking that into account? Dogmeat's an excellent companion choice no matter how you look at it.

One of the only reasons I used dogmeat was to get the cryo gun from the very start of the game. If you go up to the container and ask dog meat to fetch an item then he will grab the cryo gun from its container (which you can only pick the lock if you have master lock picking) meaning you’ll start the game with a really powerful weapon.

I feel as though dogmeat is not a very good companion. He cannot take much damage and he is close to useless in normal fights. Raiders easily take him down. He rarely kills an enemy himself. He is good for the lone wolf perk (which will probably be patched in future.) I still keep him around though. If only for the rp aspect of the game. He is pretty much the first nice thing that you meat (other than codsworth) and it feels wrong to just leave him at a settlement and forget about him. If you are trying to rp the game i suggest dogmeat but if your playing for dps/tanking then find another companion.

You can gear up Dogmeat. He's seriously tough in my game, and I haven't even used the attack dog perk yet. I actually ended up here because I was trying to see if it was worth it. ... I mean, my Dogmeat already pins people down, so I was having a hard time figuring out what the point of this perk was. But now I'm thinking I just have an awesome Dogmeat compared to everyone else. He has full armor too, even a face plate/muzzle armor, his chest piece and his special chained collar. I adore him.

In my opinion dogmeat is the best companion. During. Battle I've never had him get in my way. Also if you have the lone wanderer perk maxed out you take 30% less damage, do 25% more damage, and your carry weight is increased by 100. I'm a settlement builder so the carry weight draws me to dogmeat, but if your looking to fight the extra damage and defense would probably make up for what the other companions can do.
