What happens if you say no to joining the Minutemen?

Normally you're so busy opening new settlements and doing quests for current settlements, you've got no time to build up the settlements you do have. Without the Minutemen, you open them up at your own pace - hell, you don't even have to open Sanctuary if you don't want to. You just don't "search" the workshop.

Can you ignore the Minutemen in Fallout 4?

Simply never go to Concord, and you can completely skip the Minutemen and Preston Garvey's quests for a very long time if not forever. By going to various Settlements, you will get the same quests - Garvey is just directing you to new Settlements, while you can actually do these things on your own time.

What happens if you choose the Minutemen ending?

If you decide to pledge your final loyalty to the Minutemen Faction in Fallout 4, then you will no longer be able to complete quests or contact allies of other factions. You will need to complete a few quests that require you to take out the entirety of the Institute and (possibly) the Brotherhood of Steel.

Should you lead the Minutemen?

If you love taking on quest after quest (especially repeatable ones), you should stick with The Minutemen. Many Minutemen quests will lead to settlements that will support the group's cause. Those settlements, in turn, will have more quests for you.
